The Learning Through Dialogue Community is an exciting new opportunity for CSU students and will launch starting Fall 2021.

The Learning Through Dialogue (LTD) Community brings together students of diverse identities and backgrounds to engage in dialogues, connect and learn across differences. Together, students in LTD will build relationships, skills, awareness, and knowledge that prepare them to engage and take action for inclusion and social change on campus and beyond.

Participation in this community is application based. Students who are accepted will co-enroll in 2-3 classes with other LTD students, live together in Durward Hall, and take part in various service-learning, social, and educational opportunities.

What is LTD?
The Learning through Dialogue learning community incorporates elements of intergroup dialogue in its curriculum. This community fosters awareness, relationships and understanding both within and beyond the classroom setting. Students can become more aware of their own identities and values as well as others’ and can gain skills needed to communicate and cooperate across diverse groups. This is the community for you if you will be living on campus and have the desire to learn, live, and dialogue with others!

Required courses
There are 3 required courses for the Learning Through Dialogue community: A fall LTD seminar, a spring LTD seminar, and a section of Composition 150.

2) Spring LTD Seminar. 2 credits. Open to LTD community members only. In this course, students will build on the Fall seminar, moving from awareness & understanding to action. Students will learn how to facilitate dialogues and lead change on campus.

3) Composition 150: All LTD students who have not tested out of Composition 150 will enroll in sections of CO150 dedicated for LTD students.

● Composition 150 is an AUCC and will help move LTD students towards completing graduation requirements. This course will specifically enhance and complement your experience in the Learning Through Dialogue community because it incorporates dialogue and dialogic teaching/learning strategies into its curriculum.

Move-in and Orientation
All LTD students are required to move in one day before the regular move-in date to participate in the required Community Orientation & Retreat together.

For Fall 2024, LTD students will move in on August 19th.

Who can apply
Any undergraduate degree-seeking CSU student in any major who has an interest in learning across differences and developing their dialogue skills to make a difference for the betterment of their community.

- How to apply
- The application is not currently open – it will be available starting Fall 2024.
- Log in with your eID at http://secure.studentachievement.colostate.edu/LearningCommunities and select “Learning Through Dialogue”
- The application process has 2 parts:1) Interested students must complete an online application, which includes short answer questions on why they are interested in joining LTD and their commitment to dialogue as a tool for building.2) After completing the application form, the LTD selection committee will do individual phone calls with all applicants. This will be a brief phone conversation for us to get to know you better. It’s also a chance for you to ask questions and better understand the LTD goals and experience.

One modification to your Learning Community experience relates to designated housing that may have been previously communicated through the application process. University Housing is following the direction of the university and local health officials to determine the best way to move forward with assignments. Normally, Learning Community students are required to live in designated floors within specific residence halls; however, given the direction University Housing must take in keeping student’s health and safety a priority, we are unable to guarantee students will be assigned to a specific hall. Regardless of where a student is assigned within housing, they will still be able to participate in the Learning Community, and we will work closely with our University Housing partners in supporting the residential experience of students within their assigned hall. While things may look different in the fall, in partnership with other residential learning communities and University Housing, we are committed to providing experiential components that will positively contribute to your CSU experience.

Finally, more information from your Learning Community will be sent to students regarding any orientation dates and other requirements.

The Arts and Creative Expression Residential Learning Community (or ACE) is a program in Parmelee Hall that provides students in the visual and performing arts a collaborative environment in which to grow creatively. Students will learn to become strong advocates of the arts and will have opportunities to participate in service learning programs and outings such as gallery walks, museum visits, and live performances both on and off campus.

The ACE Program is open to first year students who are majoring in Art, Music, Dance, and Theatre. Pre-music majors do not qualify. To apply for ACE, simply select ACE on your housing application. There is no separate application or approval process.

The Campus Connections Learning Community (CCLC) provides ongoing opportunities for CSU students to stay involved with Campus Connections throughout their CSU career.

To join the CCLC, students first enroll in a 3 credit course called Campus Connections (HDFS 470). Go to the “How to Become a Mentor” page to find out how to apply to serve as a mentor and register for the 3 credit HDFS470 course. This course is open to all majors (over 95 different majors are represented in this course to date). In this unique service learning course, students mentor at-risk youth in a weekly structured group mentoring program on campus.

Students sign up for 1-8 credits in other areas related to Campus Connections (contact Jen Krafchick for more info). Participation in the CCLC allows students to gain experience working with at-risk youth, develop relationships with other CCLC students and faculty, develop leadership skills, build their resume and professionalism, and help to improve the lives of local youth. Additionally, our research shows that students who participate in Campus Connections are more likely to stay at CSU and complete graduate from college than similar students who don’t get involved in Campus Connections.

In order to be in the CCLC each semester you must sign up for at least one Campus Connections related credit. See details below about the different roles members of the CCLC play in Campus Connections.

In addition to the curricular part of Campus Connections (academic credits), we also get together for co-curriculum activities such as volunteering in the community or on campus together, attending a campus event together, social events such as dinners, etc.

Campus Connections is open to all CSU students including first year students, sophomores, juniors, seniors, and transfer students in Fall, Spring, and/or Summer semesters. It is open to all majors and to students who are undeclared. Students must be attending Colorado State University to take part in Campus Connections.

Involvement Descriptions

Mentor- HDFS470 for 3 credits
You will be given preference over new students coming into the course if the course is full. Many students take this course more than one time in order to have the full CC course experience and to earn the full 3 credits for doing it. Mentors must complete all assignments associated with the course.
Mentor Coach (MC)- HDFS470 for 1-3 credits
Mentor Coaches provide leadership for the Campus Connections lab. They are required to attend scheduled weekly lab session and may be assigned a mentee if additional youth need a mentor. MCs assist with training, are responsible for completing all assigned readings for the course, and facilitating small group discussions about the readings. MCs provide mentoring supervision to one or two mentor families, review student mentors’ weekly journal entries, and may facilitate pro-social activities during weeks 4 & 5. MCs also advise mentors on planning and implementing their required three week activity with youth.
Lead Mentor Coach (LMC)- HDFS470 for 1-3 credits
Lead Mentor Coaches attend the weekly CC Instruction team meeting, all weekly lab sessions, all training sessions, and serve as the logistics coordinator during lab each week. LMCs ensure set up and evening transitions. They also help to manage which youth need to meet with family therapist/instructor. LMCs play a critical role in training, supervising mentors and MCs, preparing for weekly labs, and ensuring that all aspects of the weekly lab run smoothly. This is a selective leadership position and only 4 are available each semester.

Special projects vary depending on the interests of the student and needs of the program. Projects may be in CC lab sessions or assisting faculty with program development or research projects.
Research Assistant (RA) – HDFS498 (1-6 credits)
Assist faculty and graduate assistants with all facets of Campus Connections research efforts. RAs may assist mentor and mentee survey administration, interview transcription, data entry and management, publications, and general program support including administrative tasks. Research experience is essential for admission to many graduate programs.
HDFS Internship – HDFS 477/488 (6-8 credits)*
HDFS students who are CC Interns serve as a mentor coach two evenings per week during a CC lab and provide additional program support in the office. Interns coordinate the Foodbank program, recruitment efforts, assist the case manager, coordinate learning community, and a multitude of other responsibilities.

*Please note: All students interested in serving as an HDFS Intern must (1) be an HDFS major; and (2) must successfully complete the HDFS internship placement process and be offered an internship with Campus Connections. The College of Natural Sciences Learning Community is a residential learning community for first year undergraduate students with majors in the College of Natural Sciences, including Applied Computing Technology, Biochemistry, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Data Science, Math, Natural Sciences, Neuroscience, Physics, Psychology, Statistics, and Zoology. All members of the CNSLC live together in two of CSU’s newest residence halls, Alpine and Piñon.

Residents can take advantage of design studios, collaborative work rooms, and an electronic classroom. In the Health & Exercise Science (HES) Residential Learning Community, you will live with other students who are taking the same courses, have similar career goals, and with students that are often vested in living active and healthy lifestyles. Living in the HES Residential Learning Community will allow for residents to connect with each other not only academically but socially as well through engaging Residence Life programming. The HES Residential Learning Community is conveniently located in Corbett Hall, across the street from Moby B Complex where students have access to a computer lab, where major courses are offered, and where the Department of Health & Exercise Science is located.

In the fall students in the community will take HES145 – Health & Wellness together as a cluster. In the spring students will take HES207 – Anatomical Kinesiology as a cluster.

The Key Communities are highly diverse first and second year learning communities designed to assist students with their transition to and through the university. Based on active and experiential learning through interdisciplinary classes, service-learning, academic and career exploration, undergraduate research and leadership development, Key aims to increase retention and academic performance of participants, encourage campus and community involvement, and promote diversity awareness. The Leadership Development Community (LDC) is designed to engage young leaders in an environment that provides opportunities and meaningful exchanges with mentors and peers while taking the first steps towards completing the requirements for the Interdisciplinary Leadership Studies Minor. In partnership with the President’s Leadership Program (PLP) through the Student Leadership, Involvement, and Community Engagement (SLiCE) Office, students will have the opportunity to explore identity, personality styles, and leadership through the Social Change Model of Leadership Development.

PLP strives to develop active, informed citizen leaders who practice ethical, inclusive leadership and embody positive humanitarian characteristics such as optimism, service to others, passion, mindfulness, and fairness. Students in the program will have the opportunity to build collaborative and meaningful relationships with peers and faculty members. In addition to attending a class together, students will practice leadership through hall, campus, and community programs.

To participate in the Leadership Development Community, students must apply, get into, and fulfill the requirements of the President’s Leadership Program: A Call to Lead course (a full academic year commitment), attend hall meetings, be an active participant in the community’s engagement efforts, and live in Durward Hall.

Warner Residential Learning Communities (RLCs) support students’ leadership development in natural resources, sustainability, and outdoor leadership. Natural Resources & Sustainability (NRS) students live and learn together; network with natural resources faculty, graduate students, student leaders, and community members; and gain professional development in natural resources and sustainability leadership. NR 192 Seminar course topics focus on sustainability principles connected to the environment, economics, and social equity. Service-learning activities focus on sustainable communities and community engagement. Students have linked course opportunities with CO 150 in special sections focused on natural resource food, energy, and water issues.

All Warner RLC students participate in professional development experiences to expand their knowledge and skills and take part in service-learning and career exploration in their chosen fields of study. At the start of the fall semester, RLC students take part in a common reading, having early move-in privileges, and participate in programming at the CSU Environmental Learning Center. Later in fall, they also take part in a weekend leadership development retreat. Spring programming includes participation in the Banff Mountain Film Festival at CSU.

Warner Residential Learning Communities (RLCs) support students’ leadership development in natural resources, sustainability, and outdoor leadership. The Transfer Residential Communities in Braiden, Allison, and Summit Halls are a partnership between Orientation and Transition Programs and Residence Life. The Communities consist of transfer students with an interest in learning more about the resources at CSU and making connections with other transfer students. The College of Agricultural Sciences is well known for the sense of family and community it fosters. This residential floor in Ingersoll Hall houses the Equine Community and is a natural extension of this sense of community. Residents can take advantage of exam reviews and club meetings that will be held periodically in common meeting rooms in Edwards. Students may learn about many extracurricular activities including: English Riding Club, Versatility Ranch Horse Club, Polo Team, Collegiate Horseman’s Association, Rodeo Club, Pre-Vet Club, Mountain Riders Club, and others. Being active and involved members of the community are important to students living in the Equine Community.

Who Can Apply

If you have an interest in science and industry, animals, and other areas of interest offered by the College of Agricultural Sciences, this program may provide you with the environment you desire.

How to Apply

To apply for the Equine Community, students must indicate that they would like to participate in the Equine Community through their Housing application.

About the Community:
The Catalyst Learning Community is a non-residential learning community for second year students who are passionate about learning and teaching. This experience provides the chance for students to be leaders within an academic setting, while exploring their own career paths.

Year 2 @ CSU

The Year 2 @ CSU: Residential Community is a co-sponsored community between Orientation and Transition Programs and Residence Life and housed in the Laurel Village. The overall purpose of the Year 2 @ CSU: Residential Community is to create a themed living community geared towards the educational goals of second-year students living in the residence halls. Specifically, the community focuses on outreach and learning connected to the following areas: career and major exploration, global citizenship and service, academic engagement and outdoor adventure. Students living on the floor connect with each other through academic workshops, a fall outdoor mountain retreat, spring service project and a variety of other floor outings. This themed community will ask residents to sign a learning agreement and no class is required to participate in this community.
